Nationwide, college town are opening their doors to sports tourism. And when you think about it, that just makes good business sense. Alabama: Huntsville
Huntsville isn’t just where the space program begins, it is also home to two NCAA universities that partner on hosting events throughout the year when their teams aren’t competing for conference and national titles.
Alabama A&M recently opened its Event Center, a 6,000-seat indoor arena that can host concerts, indoor sports, meetings and conventions. The Bulldogs’ home venue has six locker rooms, a state of the art training room, weight room, a classroom and a meeting room.
Louis Crews Stadium, home of the A&M football and track programs, has a seating capacity of 21,000 with a FieldTurf playing surface.
Just down the street, UAH has five basketball courts available, including three in its recreation center, available for rentals. The campus also has dorm rooms available for rent during summer events, including apartment-style rooms that are great places to host teams or officials. UAH’s Spragins Hall has hosted the Alabama Community College Conference basketball championships the past two years and is the home to the Chargers volleyball and basketball teams.
Both schools work with the sports tourism team to host events throughout the year, including the use of the Spencer Sports Complex, Joe Davis Stadium and the John Hunt Park cross country course.
Arkansas: Conway
More than 125 years ago, business leaders in Conway, Arkansas wanted to grow the local economy, so they created a strategy to attract institutions of higher learning to the central Arkansas town. Now, Conway is home to the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College, earning the nickname the “City of Colleges,” as well as countless dividends from that century-old decision.
Today, Conway’s population of about 65,000 is young (with a median age of 27.3) and educated (nearly 40 percent of residents have at least a bachelor’s degree). Additionally, for many of the city’s residents, the role of sports and sports facilities continues to be important because, at its heart, Conway is a sports town.
Not only do all three colleges have their own athletic facilities, but the city and its residents realize the need for top-notch sports amenities for all ages, and those facilities continue to attract organizers who are looking to find a welcoming home for their tournaments and events.
Conway also has dozens of hotels to suit all budgets, and most were built within the last eight years. Restaurants abound, with more than 200 in the area, offering all types of cuisine at all price points.
Arkansas: Fayetteville
Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, Fayetteville, Arkansas seamlessly blends small-town charm with big-time sports energy. With a 2023 population of approximately 101,680, this vibrant city is home to the University of Arkansas, with an enrollment of 33,610 students.
On game days, Fayetteville transforms into a hub of excitement. The Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium resonates with the iconic “Woo Pig Sooie” chant as fans clad in red rally behind their team. But the city’s athletic enthusiasm isn’t limited to football; it extends to elite SEC programs in basketball, track and field, baseball, softball, soccer and more.
What truly sets Fayetteville apart is the deep integration of sports into its community fabric. From spirited tailgates on The Hill to 7A high school championships under the lights, the culture of competition and pride is palpable. Florida: Gainesville/Alachua County
Gainesville, Florida is a sports haven, with facilities for virtually any sport, thanks to the University of Florida.
The Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the University of Florida campus is a 292,000-square-foot facility with 20,000 square feet of open space and a seating capacity of 10,500 in the main arena. It is home to Florida Gator sports, including basketball, volleyball and gymnastics. USA Weightlifting, USA Volleyball and Florida state cheerleading events, among other competitions, have all been hosted in the O’Connell Center arena.
Another key venue is the Alachua County Sports & Events Center at Celebration Pointe, one of Florida’s largest multi-sports and events venues, with more than 90,000 square feet of uninterrupted event space.
One premier feature of the Sports & Events Center is its World Athletics-compliant Indoor Track & Field Facility, with a 200-meter portable Mondo six-lane banked track, a Mondo eight-lane 60-meter sprint area, raised pole vault area, two raised long jump/triple jump areas, high jump, a weight throw/shot put area with cage and a five-lane 60-meter Mondo warm-up area. Indiana: South Bend Mishawaka
Sports often serve as an introduction to South Bend Mishawaka through its most iconic attraction: The University of Notre Dame. Images of the Golden Dome and the historic football program resonate with many, especially during fall Saturdays when they appear on national television.

Louisiana: Baton Rouge
Louisiana’s capital city is home to many historic education institutions, including Louisiana State University (LSU) and Southern University. Louisiana: Ruston
Ruston in Lincoln Parish is known as Louisiana’s College Town. Located in North Central Louisiana, Lincoln Parish boasts both Louisiana Tech University, known for its innovations in engineering and business technology, and Grambling State University, a Historically Black College and University with a history of producing legendary athletes, coaches and marching bands.

Eastern Michigan University’s Rowing Course at Ford Lake will come alive this summer for the 2025 USRowing RowFest National Championships. Oregon: Eugene
Eugene, known around the globe as TrackTown USA, is the proud home of the University of the Oregon Ducks. The Oregon track and field program put Eugene on the map in 1972 when it hosted the NCAA Championships for track and field again and also when it hosted the U.S. Olympic Trials for the first time.
