One of the best changes to any motto in sports was made, oddly, by International Olympic Committee, an organization that prizes tradition. The original slogan, in Latin, was Citius, Altius, Fortius, ("Faster, Higher, Stronger"), adopted by the IOC all the back in 1894. In 2021, the IOC changed the motto of the Games to Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter. The last word meant “Together,” making the new motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.” Sports, even at the amateur level, should follow this philosophy. And that’s  a good New Year’s resolution.

Among team sports, basketball has continued to be a leader in participation. Data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s 2025 Participation Report shows 31.9 million U.S. participants ages six and up, which is a one-year jump of 7.5 percent and a whopping 28.2 percent increase since 2019, well ahead of other traditional team sports. more....
