Rockford, Illinois has established itself as one of the Midwest’s most compelling sports tourism destinations. Once defined by its manufacturing roots, the city has reshaped its identity through targeted investment in athletic facilities, strategic event recruitment and strong regional partnerships. Sports tourism now plays a central role in Rockford’s economy, visibility and long-term growth.
Positioned in northern Illinois about 90 minutes from Chicago, Rockford offers convenient access to major Midwest population centers. That location gives it a competitive edge, making travel manageable for teams, families and spectators. The city also delivers a more affordable, less congested experience than larger markets, a combination that continues to resonate with youth and amateur sports organizations.

Beyond accessibility and value, Rockford offers a well-rounded visitor experience. Attendees can explore outdoor recreation along the Rock River, a growing dining and brewery scene and family-friendly attractions such as Anderson Japanese Gardens and the Discovery Center Museum.
These amenities not only enhance the overall experience but also encourage longer stays and repeat visits.
At the center of this momentum is a portfolio of high-quality, multi-use venues. The Sports Factory anchors indoor competition with its 105,000-square-foot complex designed for basketball, volleyball and other court sports. The facility consistently draws regional and national tournaments. In 2024, it generated more than $5 million in economic impact while welcoming more than 600,000 visitors.
Rockford’s outdoor and multi-sport capacity is anchored by the Mercyhealth Sportscore complexes. Mercyhealth Sportscore One features 10 soccer fields and eight softball fields. Mercyhealth Sportscore Two expands that footprint with 26 outdoor fields, including a stadium field. Six of these fields are lighted synthetic turf surfaces with championship-level amenities, supporting high-level competition across soccer, lacrosse, rugby and more.
In addition, Mercyhealth Sportscore Two features three indoor field spaces, including a full-size indoor soccer field (120 x 80 yards) that can be divided into four smaller fields. With a 70-foot clear height, the facility supports high-level competition and enables year-round play, training and tournament hosting regardless of weather conditions.
Together, these complexes position Rockford to host multiple large-scale events simultaneously, supported by a robust, year-round calendar of regional, national and championship-level competition.

The economic impact of this infrastructure is substantial. Sports tourism fuels visitor spending across hotels, restaurants and local businesses, generating more than $15 million annually from amateur tournaments alone.
Overall visitor spending in Rockford exceeded $523 million in 2024, underscoring the growing influence of tourism within the regional economy.
GoRockford, the region’s destination marketing and management organization, has played a leading role in driving this success. Through focused sales efforts, event recruitment and strong industry relationships, the organization has elevated the region’s profile on a national stage, while consistently delivering high-quality experiences for event owners and participants.
That work earned GoRockford the distinction of 2025 Sports Tourism Organization of the Year from the Sports Events & Tourism Association (Sports ETA), a recognition that reflects both performance and momentum.
Rockford has also proven it can deliver on large-scale, high-profile events. In 2025, the city hosted Illinois’ first IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon, drawing more than 10,000 athletes and spectators. The multi-year partnership is projected to generate more than $25 million in economic impact while significantly increasing national exposure for the region. Events of this caliber strengthen Rockford’s reputation as a reliable and attractive host destination.
Collaboration continues to be a defining factor in the city’s progress. Alignment between local government, park districts and tourism leadership has allowed Rockford to remain competitive, invest strategically and respond to industry trends with agility. This unified approach ensures that facilities stay relevant and that new opportunities continue to emerge.

Beyond the numbers, sports tourism has strengthened community pride and enhanced quality of life. Local residents benefit from access to premier facilities, expanded youth programming and a steady calendar of events that bring energy to the region.
These assets also support broader economic development by helping position Rockford as a place where people want to live, work and visit.
Rockford’s evolution is a clear example of how a mid-sized city can leverage sports to drive meaningful growth. With the facilities, expertise and community alignment to support events at every level, the region continues to build on its momentum. It is not just participating in the sports tourism industry, it is setting the pace for what success looks like in the Midwest.
