The new stadium for London’s Tottenham Hotspur F.C. seeks to go where no other venue in the United Kingdom has gone before, by providing two different field surfaces. One will be natural grass for English Premier League games, while a synthetic turf will be used for National Football League games, concerts and other special events.

According to a recent report on SportTechie.com:

The retractable real turf surface is where the Spurs will battle. Designed in three pitch-long steel trays (each weighing 3,000-plus [metric tons]), the surface will retract into the South Stand giving way to an artificial surface. The process of making the switch will take approximately 25 minutes.

Once the three trays come together there will be no worry of quality or safety, either. The joins are invisible and provide an up-to-standard playing surface for Premier League matches.

Sheffield engineering specialist SCX will design, engineer, build and install the retractable pitch at the 61,000-seat stadium, scheduled to open in 2018.

The NFL is slated to play at least two games per year at the new stadium, per an agreement reached in 2015.
