Alabama: Huntsville

Huntsville isn’t just where the space program begins, it is also home to two NCAA universities that partner on hosting events throughout the year when their teams aren’t competing for conference and national titles. 
 

Alabama A&M recently opened its Event Center, a 6,000-seat indoor arena that can host concerts, indoor sports, meetings and conventions. The Bulldogs home venue has six locker rooms, a state-of-the-art training room, weight room, a classroom and a meeting room.
 

Louis Crews Stadium, home of the A&M football and track programs, has a seating capacity of 21,000 with a Field Turf playing surface.
 

Just down the street, UAH has five basketball courts available, including three in its recreation center, available for rentals. The campus also has dorm rooms available for rent during summer events, including apartment-style accommodations that make great places to host teams or officials.
 

UAH’s Spragins Hall has hosted the Alabama Community College Conference basketball championships the past two years and is the home to the Chargers volleyball and basketball teams.
 

Both schools work with the sports tourism team to host events throughout the year, including the use of the Spencer Sports Complex, Joe Davis Stadium and the John Hunt Park cross country course.
 

Arkansas: Conway

150 years ago, business leaders in Conway, Arkansas wanted to grow the local economy, so they created a strategy to attract institutions of higher learning to the central Arkansas town. Now, Conway is home to the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College, earning the nickname the “City of Colleges,” as well as countless dividends from that century-old decision.
 

Today, Conway’s population of about 70,000 is young (with a median age of 27.3) and educated (nearly 40 percent of residents have at least a bachelor’s degree). Additionally, for many of the city’s residents, the role of sports and sports facilities continues to be important because, at its heart, Conway is a sports town.
 

Not only do all three colleges have their own athletic facilities, but the city and its residents realize the need for top-notch sports amenities for all ages, and those facilities continue to attract organizers who are looking to find a welcoming home for their tournaments and events.

Florida: Gainesville/Alachua County

Gainesville, Florida is a sports haven, with facilities for virtually any sport, thanks to the University of Florida.
 

The Stephen C. O’Connell Center on the University of Florida campus is a 292,000-square-foot facility with 20,000 square feet of open space and a seating capacity of 10,500 in the main arena. 
 

It is home to Florida Gator sports, including basketball, volleyball and gymnastics. USA Weightlifting, USA Volleyball and Florida state cheerleading events, among other competitions, have all been hosted in the O’Connell Center arena.
 

Another key venue is the Alachua County Sports & Events Center at Celebration Pointe, one of Florida’s largest multi-sports and events venues, with more than 90,000 square feet of uninterrupted event space.
 

One premier feature of the Sports & Events Center is its World Athletics-compliant Indoor Track & Field Facility, with a 200-meter portable MONDO six-lane banked track, a MONDO eight-lane 60-meter sprint area, raised pole vault area, two raised long jump/triple jump areas, high jump, a weight throw/shot put area with cage and a five-lane 60-meter MONDO warm-up area. The facility has already welcomed multiple events.

Illinois: Champaign-Urbana

Springfield, Illinois has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with its colleges for a number of years. The staff works with coaches, athletic directors and facility managers to host a wide assortment of events on and off campus.
 

Millikin University, 30 minutes east of Springfield in Decatur, has collaborated to host a NCAA DIII Wrestling Regional at BOS Center, creating an invaluable experience for athletes and visitors, and opening the door to Springfield bidding on future national events.
 

NCAA Women’s Golf Regional and GLVC Volleyball Championship (Great Lakes Valley) are prime examples of offsite events that have worked with the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS).
 

Athletic Director Mike Hermann brings to UIS a wealth of hosting experience gained from DI schools. 
 

UIS is the host institution for the 2027 Conference Commissions Women’s Basketball DII Tip-off Classic.
 

Recently, Springfield has taken its relationship with the UIS facility management team to a new level as the university is realizing the value in having on-campus events. This fall, there is the US Boomerang Nationals to look forward to, as well as a homegrown international rugby event. These niche sports are expected to help to raise the university’s profile in the community.
 

Kentucky: Lexington
