Myrtle Beach to Host Mentor Cup and Dream Challenge

Oct 17, 2019

The second annual Dream Weekend presented by Liberty Mutual - a charity event created by pioneering media personality Kelly Tilghman - will be held Oct. 25-26. The public still has time to participate in an event that will feature World Golf Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez and Javier Colon, a winner of NBC’s “The Voice,” in addition to giving away an entry into the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course.

Money raised during the Dream Weekend will be donated to the Gene’s Dream Foundation, which was created to honor Gene Weldon, a revered PGA professional who worked in the Myrtle Beach market for nearly 50 years before passing away in 2017. Weldon mentored countless kids during his career, including Tilghman, who founded the organization.

The Dream Weekend will begin with the Gene’s Dream Gala on Oct. 25 at the Surf Golf & Beach Club, an event that will feature a three-course dinner, cocktails, a silent auction and an acoustic performance by Colon.

The highlight of the weekend will be the playing of the Mentor Cup and the Dream Challenge on Oct. 26 at Tidewater Golf Club, one of America’s premier public courses. With eight holes that play along either Cherry Grove or the Intracoastal Waterway, Tidewater is the area’s most scenic course and an ideal host venue for the event.

The Mentor Cup will feature two person teams - a junior golfer and an adult mentor - that play a 9-hole scramble. The event is designed to create lasting memories and provide young golfers a mentor who can positively impact their life on and off the course.

Following the Mentor Cup will be the highly anticipated Dream Challenge, an 18-hole, four-person team event that will send its winner to the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. Thirty-two teams will compete in the captain’s choice event and spots are still available in the Dream Challenge for golfers interested in winning a trip to Kiawah.

The inaugural event in 2018 raised $50,000.
