Colorado Springs Opens Ice Hockey Season with Special Event

Olympic City USA's premier NCAA Division I ice hockey programs will take center ice on Tuesday, October 2 as the Sports Corp presents its annual College Hockey Face-Off Luncheon at the Colorado Springs Marriott at 12:00 pm (doors open at 11:30 am).

Coaches Frank Serratore of the United States Air Force Academy and Mike Haviland of Colorado College will talk about the upcoming season and the prospect of more success.

Serratore, who has agreed to a new five-year contract extension, just completed his 21st season at the Academy with a record of 379-335-81. He has led the Falcons to seven Atlantic Hockey Conference tournament championships, seven NCAA appearances, three NCAA Elite Eights and two AHC regular-season titles. Last year, he led an injury-laden team to its second straight AHC tournament championship and an NCAA berth

Haviland'sresurgent Tigers went 15-17-5 and gave notice that they are back to form after three tough years. CC beat North Dakota, Omaha, and Denver along the way. He is 35-96-13 overall in four seasons at Colorado College, and was rewarded with a contract extension after the bounce-back season by departed CC athletic director Ken Ralph.

Haviland joined the Tigers on May 9, 2014 and signed a multiyear deal that week. He has coached in the NCAA, ECHL, AHL and NHL, winning a Stanley Cup as an assistant coach of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010. He is a recipient of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award, given to the AHL Coach of the Year.

The Air Force Academy opens the season on October 7 with an exhibition home game with the University of Alberta. The Falcons begin the regular season on October 12 with a home matchup with Denver, then play CC at the Broadmoor World Arena on October 13.

The Tigers open on October 6-7 with a pair of road games at Alaska-Anchorage before coming home to meet Alabama-Huntsville on October 12 and Air Force on October 13 at the Broadmoor World Arena.
