White-Spunner Construction has been awarded the contract from the City of Saraland to provide construction services for the infrastructure of the indoor recreation center and certain outdoor facility elements of The Land, the City of Saraland’s new sports and recreation complex, which will feature cutting-edge sports fields, hard courts, multi-purpose event spaces, family entertainment center and numerous amenities for various sports and recreational activities.

The proposal offered by the Mobile, Alabama-based contractor came in under budget with a base bid of $24,307,000. It includes the development of the 78,000 square feet indoor recreation center which will include four regulation-size basketball courts and eight regulation-size collegiate volleyball courts; three outdoor tennis courts; six outdoor pickleball courts; three beach volleyball courts; disc golf course; nature trail; and an outdoor walking path connecting the indoor recreation center track to the outdoor facilities.

According to Ashley-Nicole Flowers, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Saraland, White-Spunner is known for its experience at managing large, complex construction projects and its national reputation for delivering the highest quality projects on time and under budget.

Construction is anticipated to begin on April 10, 2024, with an estimated completion date in May 2025, marking the opening of The Land’s entire complex. Prior to the completion of Phase 1A construction, The Land anticipates opening select outdoor facilities like the baseball and softball diamonds and multi-purpose fields in fall 2024. Hoar Program Management (HPM), a firm specializing in providing comprehensive program and project management services, ran the selection process on behalf of the city and will provide project oversight during construction.

“The selection of White-Spunner to begin construction on The Land’s indoor recreation center, the largest indoor space in Mobile County, and remaining outdoor facility elements marks a pivotal step forward in our journey towards completing this project, bringing us closer to achieving our vision,” said Dr. Howard Rubenstein, Mayor of Saraland. “This partnership marks a significant milestone towards establishing a premier facility that will elevate recreational opportunities for our residents while becoming a sought-after venue for sports competitions and gatherings throughout the region."
