Arthur Pack Regional Park Set for Grand Opening Aug. 1

Pima County has partnered with the nonprofit Southern Arizona Soccer Association and the Marana Unified School District to convert a baseball field to two year-round soccer fields at Arthur Pack Regional Park, 9101 N. Thornydale Road.

The fields will open Aug. 1.

The new fields help address the needs of Mountain View High School, which is landlocked and in need of more practice space for its football and soccer teams and band.

Kaissa Gurvine, president of the Southern Arizona Soccer Association and Tucson Adult Soccer League, said the adult league will use the fields on Friday nights for their games and partnered with Region 206 of the American Youth Soccer Organization on this project so “the kids have a place to play on for practices during the week and games on Saturdays.”

“These fields not only will be used by all the high school teams year-round since the high school has no practice fields on campus for all of their sports teams, but will be used by AYSO Region 206, which has 1,000 kids playing and not enough field space for all their practices and games,” Gurvine said. “Without the County being willing to work with us to transform this field, all three organizations would be struggling for fields.”

Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation consulted with the Thornydale Little League and the Kino Baseball League about the conversion because the two leagues use the park’s 10 baseball/softball fields. Arthur Pack Park had three full-size baseball fields (at least 300 feet from home base to the fence and 90 feet between bases) so the leagues did not object to converting one of them to two soccer fields.

Call Field Coordinator Len Altieri at 520-877-6120 to arrange for public use of the soccer fields. For more information about Arthur Pack Regional Park, please visit this site.
