CVB Announces Plans to Open Multiple Facilities Designed to Boost Sports Tourism

McAllen is stepping up to the plate when it comes to the sports tourism industry. The DeLeon Soccer Complex is scheduled to be finished September 2014 and will host soccer tournaments and football games as well as other sporting events.

The complex will have nine fields including a championship field and two youth fields. Plans to construct a Class A disc golf course are also underway. What was formerly the executive Nine Holes of the Palm View Golf Course are being converted to a tournament quality 18-hole disc golf course. Play is expected to begin in late fall of 2014.

One of the most highly anticipated and extreme sports projects on the horizon is a motocross park that will give riders the opportunity to refine their riding skills in a controlled environment. The ability to offer riding lasses is also in the works. Early predictions are that the course will be ready to ride at the end of 2014.

Two major projects that will make McAllen a premier sports destination are construction of baseball and softball complexes. The master plans showcase 16 baseball fields with all the modern amenities. What will set this venue apart from the others is plans to construct a miracle field for disabled kids.

The fields will be ready for action in fall of 2014. The softball complex will be built in what is now the Municipal Baseball Park. Plans are to rework the area to host 6 baseball fields, giving McAllen a total of 12 fields and the ability to host large tournaments.

The projects will catapult McAllen to the list of top sports destinations in Texas. Throw in the long, warm summers and the short, mild winters, along with first-class shopping and a plethora of restaurants, and McAllen will surely be a player in the sports tourism industry for years to come.
