The destination marathon, one of the hottest trends in sports travel, is on the radar of savvy travel agents these days. And if planners of applicable events are wise, they’ll make outreach to those planners, who can help them bring in more participants.

Agents with an ear to the ground are tapping into the lucrative new market, according to Travel Market Report, of sports enthusiasts seeking adventure destinations.

“Many ‘healthy’ groups are taking their offers to new heights by offering a package to marathons or walks for non-profits,” Tricia Peacock, owner of Peacock Travel Group in Little Rock, Ark., told the magazine, adding that she also works with travelers with recreation-minded lifestyles — including divers, cyclists and bowlers.

“I have a lot of women who are members of teams and they will make a mini vacation, tying in a side trip to Lake Tahoe,” she said, referring to bowlers. “We get them a good group rate for the hotels, and organize shipping their bowling equipment.”

Women also are grabbing their guns and heading for wide open spaces to hunt waterfowl and participate in other shooting sports. Literally.

As Peter Lane Taylor reports for Forbes.com in a piece titled “Shotgun Vacations: Luxury Travel for Women Who Love to Shoot,” “the convergence between the Second Amendment, travel and women in particular is a year-round gun shop topic in Maryland, Texas, Kansas, Georgia, and numerous other states. Savvy businesses and politicos are now realizing its relevance to consumer spending, as well.”
