Think Shark Tank, but for sports startups. That’s the premise behind the third annual “Sports Tank” competition that will be held in April in New York City. Ten sports-specific startup companies will have the opportunity to pitch their business models in front of strategic venture capitalists and world-class sports industry executives, according to a press release from event owner TPG Sports Group.

Participating companies will compete to receive funding and partnerships they need to accelerate the growth of their business. Applications to be one of 10 selected companies provided with an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to make their Sports Tank pitch are due March 1. Finalists will be determined March 10.

“This year, we’re excited for companies in eSports, VR, Health & Fitness, Mobile, Tech and Fan Engagement,” Pete Philo, owner and president of TPG Sports Group, told SportTechie earlier this month. “We look for any company that will make an impact in the sports and entertainment industries.”

Two prominent executives from the finance industry have been added to the 2017 edition of Sports Tank: Duncan Niederauer (former CEO of the New York Stock Exchange and presently the founding partner of Mountain Top Advisory Group) and Guy Adami (host of CNBC’s Fast Money). Representatives from the professional-league level and athlete representation also will be on hand, and the new “Next Gen Arena” will be a platform for early-stage startups separate from this year’s Sports Tank finalists.
