The Smith River Sports Complex is excited to announce the addition of five fitness stations along the main walking path. The project was completed during the winter months by local student and Eagle Scout Jonathan Hummer.

"We are grateful for Jonathan Hummer's addition to our facility," Billy Russo, SRSC director of operations, said. "This addition not only gives our visitors additional activities to enjoy but adds to our diverse attractions and amenities offered at the SRSC."

The five fitness stations, all made from repurposed wood, allow complex visitors a quality place to perform hamstring stretches, push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups without having to leave the concrete path regularly used for walking, running or jogging. The final station is a balance beam for guests to test their ability to balance. Along with each station is a sign to identify the task that should be performed as well as instructions on how to properly perform the exercise.

"Every time I'm at the Complex there are always a ton of people walking around the trail," Hummer said. "I figured they would be walking right by the stations and make great use of it."

Hummer is a resident of Martinsville and currently a senior at Bassett High School. Hummer is also a captain on the Bengal soccer team and a member of the football team in addition to Boy Scouts of America.

"I like the Complex and I like playing at the Complex," Hummer said. "So I thought I would give back and everyone always does a picnic area, I wanted to do something people could use to exercise at."

The SRSC is a 90-acre free public park and is open to guests 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Amenities include six playing fields, an Evos playground on synthetic surface, paved walking paths and hiking trails along the Smith River, Smith River access with two observation decks, a meeting room  and two picnic pavilions that are available for rent for private parties. The complex is also equipped with clean restrooms and a concession stand. The SRSC will also be opening a 20 tee-box driving range this spring and a 129-foot long water slide this summer.
