As the Storm’s success continues to surge, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) has announced they will host India’s World Cup Overwatch team from Monday, October 21 through Monday, October 28. This visit comes on the heels of the announcement of a partnership with Global Esports—Asia’s fastest-growing esports company.

“India’s World Cup team chose Harrisburg because of it’s continued momentum in the esports industry,” said Dr. Rushindra Sinha, CEO of Global Esports. “Harrisburg has redefined esports and what that means for collegiate teams. Their facilities are ideal for us leading up to this major tournament, including the technology and access to most-skilled coaches and athletes that will challenge our gameplay and get us to that next level to take home the World Cup.”

The Overwatch World Cup will pit the top 28 teams from around the world against one another in “a global celebration of competition and community.” (https://worldcup.playoverwatch.com/en-us/) India selecting Harrisburg, PA above a myriad of other cities with collegiate programs throughout the US as their practice location is a significant nod to the caliber of what HU has built.

HU has arranged a variety of events to welcome Team India during their stay, including a tour at the Capitol, a trip to Hershey’s Chocolate World, and a dinner that will be open to the large local Indian community of Harrisburg at which they will be honored. They will also battle the Storm in a public show match on Thursday, October 24th at Club XL, in which local esports fans can meet the players, get autographs and stay for the live gameplay.

“We are thrilled to host these talented athletes at our campus and show them everything that Harrisburg has to offer,” said Dr. Eric Darr, Harrisburg University President. “The momentum we’ve seen over the past two years is a clear indication that we’re making an impact. Team India choosing our town and our university is another example of how we aren’t just pushing the boundaries in esports at the college level, but nationally as well.”

Players of the World Cup team will train under the tutelage of Storm Overwatch Coach Joe “JoeMeister” Gramano and as they scrimmage against other North American teams. After their visit to Harrisburg, Team India will travel to Anaheim, Calif. to compete against professional esports teams from around the world in the 2019 Overwatch World Cup at this year’s Blizzcon. The competition takes place Nov. 1–2.
