The cold Erie weather is setting the stage for an action-packed weekend of winter sports as ice fishing and volleyball tournaments take place across Erie County this weekend.
On Saturday, the inaugural Flagship Ice Open presented by the Western PA Team Bass Series and Western PA Hardwater takes place at Presque Isle Bay, providing competitive ice fishing enthusiasts a day on the ice. Participants will meet at the Misery Bay parking lot with registration beginning at 5:30 a.m. The competition runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
As one of the largest competitive ice fishing tournaments in the United States, the event is expected to welcome over 50 teams. Each team is permitted an eight-fish limit, including any combination of crappie, perch and bluegill/panfish.
"The Western PA Hardwater Tournament Series provides anglers an opportunity to come together and enjoy the best of ice fishing,” said Billy Hines, senior buyer at FishUSA. “We’re excited to see the event continue to grow and can’t wait to welcome everyone to Presque Isle Bay this weekend."
On Sunday, EPIC Volleyball will host the Ohio Valley Region girls’ 14 regional tournament at Fort LeBoeuf High School. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. and is the second of five scheduled for the year, featuring 12 teams. Spectator tickets are available for $5.
