The 130 memorable miles cyclists will experience during the inaugural New York City-to-Philadelphia Greenway Ride feature a number of noteworthy segments of the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway, stretching from Canada to Key West. The ride, originally scheduled for May 16-17 and now moved to a date in the fall (yet to be announced) will help to grow the Greenway between New York City and Philadelphia.

Nearly half the NYC to Philly route will be on trails and paths separated from traffic. On-road sections include a mix of suburban, urban and commercial corridors, and cyclists will be supported by escorts in busier sections, police vehicles at major intersections and SAG services.

Connecting the two iconic American cities via scenic Garden State greenways, the route is highlighted by the following East Coast Greenway segments:

New York: Hudson River Greenway The Hudson River Greenway is a great way to travel north and south on the island of Manhattan, with broad views of the Hudson River. This most populated stretch of East Coast Greenway begins at Battery Park and travels the length of the island to the George Washington Bridge. Join the throng of bicycle commuters and recreationalists, runners and walkers.

New Jersey: Union County and Middlesex County Park Paths Between Newark and New Brunswick, the East Coast Greenway features 20-plus park paths through Union and Middlesex counties, running from the Passaic Riverfront Path to the Middlesex Greenway. Throughout this stretch of trail, riders will have access to many amenities, including picnic benches, sports fields and running tracks, restrooms, water features and forests.

New Jersey: Middlesex GreenwayThe Middlesex Greenway is a picturesque open space within the communities of Metuchen, Edison and Woodbridge, New Jersey. Situated on a historic portion of the Lehigh Valley rail corridor, the 3.5-mile long corridor provides a 10-foot wide, paved trail with several fully accessible entrances connecting a diverse array of neighborhoods to area parks, schools and shopping.

New Jersey: D&R Trail (Delaware & Raritan Canal Towpath) Connecting New Brunswick and Trenton, the natural surface D&R Trail follows the canal, making for beautiful, flat riding. Watch turtles sun themselves on logs, then plop in the water. Trail conditions will vary based on weather and can be a little slower going right after or during rain with muddy patches of trail. The East Coast Greenway follows a 10-mile portion of the D&L Trail along the crushed stone Delaware Canal Towpath, connecting Morrisville to Bristol, where the Bristol Spurline Trail brings visitors right into the heart of downtown to its waterfront park overlooking the Delaware River. Two new additions to the D&L Trail in 2019 – the CSX Tunnel and Tyburn Road Underpass – have created safe, continuous passageways through the scenic region.

NYC to PhilPennsylvania: Delaware River Trail The developing Delaware River Trail includes a series of segments of the East Coast Greenway in Philadelphia, which are becoming linked together from the city's northeast border to Center City: the Baxter Trail, Pennypack on the Delaware, Kensington and Tacony Trail, Port Richmond Trail and a portion of the central Delaware River Trail from Penn Treaty Park to Spring Garden Street. These trails feature bridges over Pennypack and Frankford creeks, native vegetation, restored shorelines and tidal wetlands, fishing piers, boat launches and spectacular riverfront views.

Pennsylvania: Schuylkill River Trail Run, bike, walk, or skate this paved stretch of Greenway along the river, which is one of our route’s most iconic segments. The Greenway meets the Schuylkill River Trail by the Cosmic Cafe and Lloyd Hall, just downriver from Boathouse Row; heads south to pass by the impressive Philadelphia Museum of Art and Fairmount Water Works and winds down to the Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk, a wide, elevated path 50 feet from the shore with great views of the city skyline. From there, you can explore the rest of the Greenway through southwest Philly, connecting Bartram's Garden, the 58th St Greenway, Cobbs Creek Trail and the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge.

The New York City-to-Philadelphia Greenway Ride can be completed with a hybrid, gravel or road bike. We recommend a hybrid, gravel or other bike with thicker tires due to the mixed terrain of the ride route. If riding a road bike, we recommend a minimum tire width of 28mm. Route conditions will vary based on weather and can be a little slower going right after or during rain with muddy patches of trail.
