One of America’s newest and fastest growing sports is coming to Fort Wayne this weekend, when the 2014 USAPA Great Lakes Regional Pickleball Championships will be held at SportONE/Parkview Fieldhouse from August 15-17.

The inaugural event welcomes pickleball competitors from the Midwest and Southeast regions of the United States. An estimated 200 participants will compete for three days in a round-robin, age bracket tournament. The public is encouraged to attend the free event.

The championship was brought to the Summit City by the Fort Wayne Pickleball Association, which holds local competitions and clinics at Lions Park and other venues. Residents can learn more about the FWPA at www.fwpickleball.com.

Pickleball is a fast-paced game that combines tennis, badminton and ping pong, and features a whiffle ball and 34’’ high net. There are approximately 100,000-150,000 pickleball players nationwide, according to event organizers.
