The 2014 Pikes Peak Ascent is shaping up to be one of the most competitive races in the event’s 59-year history.

On Saturday, August 16th, some of the top mountain runners in the U.S., including several from Colorado Springs, will defend the Stars and Stripes on Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain – in the World Mountain Running Association’s Long Distance Championship. Some 80 runners representing 20 countries will participate.

The race will be held in conjunction with the Pikes Peak Ascent – think of it as a race within a race. Men’s and women’s teams from the USA will compete against a talented international field to determine who is the toughest in the challenging 13.32-mile foot race from Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak. Individual champions will also be determined.

Members from Team USA, including Colorado Springs runners Allie McLaughlin (the 2014 U.S. Mountain Running Champion), and Shannon Payne (2014 Mt. Washington champion) will be present.
