The Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission announced it has landed the first-ever Amateur Softball Association (ASA) fastpitch tournament on the Western Slope.

“We are excited about the opportunity for ASA to host a tournament on the Western Slope,” commented Colorado ASA Commissioner Nik Mead. “The local teams are thrilled to be able to play in their own backyard.”

The tournament, slated for Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24, 2016, will feature approximately 60 teams traveling to Grand Junction from Colorado and Utah. Three girls age divisions will compete in the tournament: 12 and under, 14 and under, and 16 and under. Teams play three games in pool-style play on Saturday and switch to single elimination format on Sunday leading to a championship for each age division.

“Our goals are to ensure athletes and their families have a memorable experience both on and off the field, while capitalizing on the positive economic impact derived from youth sports,” said Grand Junction City Council Member Barbara Traylor Smith. “The event was secured through collaborative efforts of the Sports Commission, Visitor and Convention Bureau and Parks and Recreation and the result is a win-win for Colorado ASA and our community.”

“Grand Junction is a sports town and landing this tournament is a great opportunity for our community to showcase our assets, talents and capability for hosting more events like this in the future,” added Colorado Mesa University President Tim Foster.

Colorado ASA was founded in 1952 in Broomfield, CO. The nonprofit organization has developed into the strongest and most progressive softball organization in the state.

The Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission is a collaborative effort between Colorado Mesa University, the City of Grand Junction, Mesa County, the City of Fruita and the Town of Palisade to promote sport tourism in the community. The organization’s mission is to represent greater Grand Junction in attracting new and enhancing existing sporting events that positively impact our economy and community, and provide event owners with exceptional customer service. www.grandjunctionsports.org
