City to Host the 8th Annual Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb and USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championships on August 12, 2017

Two premier cycling events on the famous Pikes Peak Highway will return to Colorado Springs in 2017 with the support of the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation. The USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championship and the Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb will take place on Saturday, August 12.

The inaugural USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championship and the accompanying Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb on August 13, 2016, attracted 346 competitors from 26 states who challenged the demanding course to the top of America's Mountain.

The Sports Corp's President and CEO, Tom Osborne, says "The honor of hosting the USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championship gives us the opportunity to showcase our great sports community, the city's well-known cycling reputation and America's Mountain. We are delighted to work with USA Cycling on this wonderful event on their tremendous schedule of events for 2017."

Colorado Springs is the home of USA Cycling and the United States Olympic Committee. USA Cycling is the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States. It coordinates and provides overall administration and governance for disciplines of road, track, mountain bike, cyclo-cross, BMX, and collegiate racing. USAC also conducts the process of naming the riders that will represent the United States at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"We are excited to be back on top of iconic Pikes Peak for the USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championships again in 2017," said USA Cycling Vice President of National Events Micah Rice. "As far as hill climbs go, very few mountains in the country compare to the beauty and difficulty of this race right here in our backyard of Colorado Springs. We are looking forward to once again work with the Colorado Springs Sports Corp to make this event another resounding success."

The city has hosted the USA Pro Challenge three times, including the inaugural cycling spectacular's opening stage in 2011, the 1986 UCI Road World Championships and among many world-class cycling events at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center Velodrome, the official training venue for U.S. Olympic and Paralympic track cycling and USA Roller Sports.

The USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championships will attract many top cyclists from across the nation and will also include opportunities for disabled riders in its competitive field. U.S. Paralympics has also approved events for Para-cyclists who want to compete in the unique event.

The start line for the event is located at 9,390 ft./2,862 m and the finish line is 156 turns, 12.42 mi./20 km, later, with an average grade of 7%, and a gain in attitude of 4,725 ft./1.440 m, to  conclude at 14,115 ft./4,302m.

Cycling racing to the summit of Pikes Peak was renewed in 2010, and this year marks the 8th consecutive year for The Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb, an annual event of the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation.

The race is fully supported throughout the event, with rest areas, support vehicles, medical support and radio communications along the entire route.

The USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championships will be held again in conjunction with The Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb Gran Fondo fun ride on the same morning, August 12.

The gran fondo is a non-competitive fun ride that gives cyclists of all abilities a truly unique experience on the mountain course. Competitors in the gran fondo will ride in a fully supported event as they make their way to the summit of Pikes Peak this year.

Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb will open soon. Please visit Registration for the USA Cycling Hill Climb National Championship and The USACHillClimbNationals.org or PikesPeakCyclingHillClimb.org for more information about each specific event.
