Boulderthon in Boulder, CO, has announced new sustainability efforts for its race on September 28, 2025. This year’s event will provide hemp bibs to all 10K participants.
The event, presented by PUMA, is also partnering with Hiccup and the City of Boulder to use reusable silicone cups for water and hydration. The City of Boulder provided a US$5,000 stipend towards the use of the cups.
Justin Greenstein, Manager of the City of Boulder’s Office of Special Events, said “The City of Boulder has a long-standing dedication to environmental sustainability.
“We are proud to support Boulderthon on their sustainability efforts, and hope that we can help inspire others in our community, as well as nationally, to continue to implement a culture of shared environmental stewardship.”
Tina Muir, a climate advocate and founder of Racing for Sustainability, has been brought on as the event’s sustainability advisor, and said “Boulderthon is a leader in the industry for being innovative and creative in finding new ways to bring the industry forward.
“We have some exciting times ahead, exploring how sustainability can be a priority and work alongside performance. We want to get runners excited about what is possible in this sport they love so much.”
The 2025 Boulderthon has also partnered with Charlotte’s Web, a Colorado-based company. According to the event organising team, the company will assist in its sustainability mission.
Alexa Squillaro, Event Director of Boulderthon, said “It’s important to us at Boulderthon that our event truly represents the Boulder culture, which includes the incredible sustainability efforts we see throughout our whole city.
“Through these partnerships and new race features, we are taking great strides to make our event even more eco-friendly, and hope to inspire other events nationwide to follow suit.”
New marathon and half marathon routes will debut at the 2025 event. The marathon elevation gain has been cut from 982 feet to 603 feet, and the half marathon elevation gain from 384 feet to 203 feet. The half marathon course will feature views of the Flatirons.
The 10K course will take participants through the streets of Boulder before a finish on Pearl Street Mall. A Heart to Heart 5K by BCH offers an all-road, fast and flat experience that allows wheelchair athletes and those using wheeled vehicles, including duo runners, to participate.
In its first year, Boulderthon became the second-largest race in Colorado and the largest autumn/fall running event in the state. In its fourth year, the event drew nearly 10,000 runners from all 50 US states and 22 countries.
