Who’s ready to take their triathlon hosting chops to the next level?  (Oh, right, that would be everyone these days). World Triathlon, the international governing body of multisport events (including triathlon, duathlon and paratriathlon) is offering destinations the chance to host some of its marquee events.

Events up for bid include the World Triathlon Championship Finals, World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships and World Triathlon Multisport Championships. All the information you need to know is below. Click here and act now to get started.

Series Information: The World Triathlon Championship Series comprises Standard-Distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run), Sprint-Distance (750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run), two-day Semi-Final/Final formats and Mixed Relay Series events, including the annual World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships.

Long-Term Hosting Potential: According to the packet, host cities will have the opportunity to host a World Triathlon event on a multi-year basis.

Sustainability: Sustainability of destinations is essential to World Triathlon; as a result, the organization has created this Sustainability Guidefor potential hosts.

Deadline for presenting bids for the three events is February 28, 2021 with host cities announced on March 31, 2021.

World Triathlon Championship Finals
Bid Information and Host Manual

Background and Course Information:
The World Triathlon Championship Finals serves as the last event of the Series and offers the highest number of points for the Elite athletes’ World Championship rankings. The event also includes the U23, Para triathlon and Age-Group (standard, super sprint, and standard aquabike) World Championships.

The World Championships include the following races:

  • World Triathlon Championship Finals for Elite athletes
  • Under23 World Championships
  • Para triathlon World Championships
  • Age-Group Standard-Distance World Championships
  • Age-Group Super Sprint-Distance World Championships
  • Age-Group Standard-Distance Aquabike World Championships.

Importance: The event is known as the crown jewel of World Triathlon’s annual calendar and previous events have been hosted in Chicago, London, Budapest and Lausanne, with the next finals planned in Edmonton in 2021 and Abu Dhabi in 2022.

In addition to being part of the official World Championships, World Triathlon Championship Series races are key qualifying events for the Olympic Games. The series attracts significant media coverage and exposure, including live broadcast distribution at every event through global media as well as on World Triathlon’s own OTT platform, Triathlonlive.tv. World Triathlon’s social media channels further extend the reach of every event and every Host City to sports fans in all corners of the world.

Economic Impact: According to the bid package, the World Triathlon Championships Finals creates an instant economic impact by bringing in a significant number of international tourists to the host city, consisting of over 5,000 competitors, support teams, officials, family and friends. With the addition of local races, the number of competitors can exceed 10,000.

International Meeting Included: The World Triathlon Championship Finals host city will also welcome the annual World Triathlon Congress with delegates from up to 173 countries, making decisions on the future of the sport.

World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships

Background: World Triathlon is also welcoming bids from host cities, with the endorsement of their respective national federation, for a World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships in 2023 or 2024. The host of the inaugural edition of this event will be Bermuda in 2021, and in Montreal.

Scheduling/event dates with certain flexibility with the day and start time requests. The recommended period when the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships should be held between March and July in order to maximize participation in all categories. World Triathlon is open to evaluate alternative dates.

The World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships includes the following races:

  • Elite Super-Sprint Championship Series
  • Junior World Championships
  • Age-Group Sprint-Distance World Championships
  • Elite, Junior and Age-Group Mixed Relay World Championships

Suggested Schedule: Wednesday | World Triathlon Executive Board meeting, Elite briefing and familiarizations, Age-Group Team managers meeting.

Thursday| World Triathlon Executive Board meeting, Junior briefing and familiarizations, Pasta Party, Opening Ceremony

Friday| Elite Super-Sprint Championship Series Qualifiers and Repechage, Age-Group Mixed Relay

Saturday| Elite Super-Sprint Championships Series Eliminator Finals, Junior Women, Junior Men

Sunday| Age-Group Sprint-Distance, Junior Mixed-Relay, Elite Mixed-Relay

2024 World Triathlon Multisport World Championships

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships include:

  • World Triathlon Long Distance Championships
  • World Triathlon Duathlon Championships (Sprint and Standard)
  • World Triathlon Cross World Championships
  • World Triathlon Aquathlon Championships
  • World Triathlon Aquabike Championships

Background: The event is held over about 10 days, with approximately 4,000 athletes participating.Economic impact, as a result of this, plus spectators, is noteworthy.

Requirement: The Local Organizing Committee must host a test event (National or International event) the year prior to the World Triathlon Multisport Championships at least on Long Distance Triathlon and the Cross Triathlon disciplines (being held back to back).

Additional Benefits: This event is also an important development opportunity from the grassroots to elite level, giving athletes from a wide range of Age-Groups the opportunity to race. The entire occasion is a visual spectacle designed to inspire and motivate, from the experienced to the newcomer.
