The results are in! RaceRaves, the leading online race finder and reviews community for runners, has released its authoritative list highlighting the best marathon in every U.S. state, as determined by runners across the country.

More than a laundry list of great races, this handy new "who's who" guide includes a brief synopsis of each race to help first-timers and seasoned marathoners alike discover new events and build their all-star marathon wish list.

Winners were determined through an online poll conducted by RaceRaves from Sept 6 to Oct 7. The poll featured four to five marathons per state plus a write-in option; runners were also asked to share their favorite “hidden gem” marathon. Thousands of runners from all 50 states voted, and their votes — along with finisher reviews and ratings posted on RaceRaves.com — formed the basis for the final list and feature.

Due to their exclusive status and popularity as Abbott World Marathon Majors, the Boston Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon were excluded from the voting in their respective states.

Result highlights include the Fargo Marathon in North Dakota, which earned bragging rights as the top overall vote-getter in the poll; the Big Sur International Marathon in California, which prevailed in the state with the greatest number of marathons; and the Pikes Peak Marathon in Colorado, which won despite (or thanks to) its uniquely challenging up-and-back course with the highest point of any U.S. marathon at 14,115 feet.

Common themes among the winning events include exceptional production and on-course support, strong community involvement, and a scenic marathon course that showcases the beauty and attractions of the local region.

“This initiative was born out of our passion and commitment to help runners discover the best races across the country.” said RaceRaves Co-founder Mike Sohaskey. “We’re thrilled at the enthusiastic response from runners nationwide and proud to amplify their voices for the benefit of the entire community. And we congratulate each of these first-class events on this well-deserved recognition.”

The full article including the complete list of winning events by state is available on the company’s blog at RaceRaves.com. The blog also features one of the industry’s most comprehensive articles on the best Boston Marathon Qualifying Races, as well as a helpful primer on the world’s most popular marathons, the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
