Running USA Lists Fastest Growing Running Races in 2015

Zappos.com Bay to Breakers 2015, San Francisco (12K); Brooklyn Half Marathon; Nike Women's Half Marathon San Francisco (half-marathon); and Marine Corps Marathon were among those seeing the largest races seeing gains in participation in 2015, according to Running USA.

The organization's report, "Sport: Largest Road Races," showed a number of the largest races in the United States retain their top ten positions, including the largest in the AJC Peachtree Road Race, but there are a number of races climbing the ranks, along with seven races moving into the top 50.

Each year, Running USA releases rankings for the nation’s top road races including such popular lists as the Top 100 U.S. Timed, Largest by Distance, Largest by State, Largest Festivals, Women-Only and Youth Runs as well as the World’s Largest. Data is sourced from Athlinks. These lists are cited by the media, used by race organizers and brands, and perused by running fans around the world.

Largest Road Races - Analysis: 2015

  • The top five races in the United States in 2015 retained the same spots from 2014.

  • AJC Peachtree Road Race, retaining its top spot overall with 54,752 finishers in 2015, down from 57,660 finishers in 2014

  • TCS New York City, BolderBOULDER, Lilac Bloomsday, and Chicago Marathon retained the second to fifth spots.

  • Six of the races have at least 30,000 runners, down from 9 in 2014.

  • Chicago and Washington DC each have 4 races in the top 50 overall.

  • 19 of the top 50 races are half marathons, the most popular and most favored distance overall (as reported in the National Runner Survey).
