The International Trail Running Association (ITRA) has launched the first-ever Women’s Trail Day, a new international initiative encouraging women to get out on the trails and help close the gender gap in the sport.
Set for Sunday, June 1, the campaign invites women around the world to run solo or in groups… ‘to celebrate community, movement and connection with nature.’
ITRA notes that, while female participation in trail running is increasing slightly – women now make up 29% of ITRA’s athlete database, up from 28% in 2023 – the organization argues that more visibility and support is needed to achieve balance in the sport.
“We know there’s still more we can do to make sure women feel truly invited and supported, no matter their age, fitness level, background or where they are starting from,” said Janet Ng, President of ITRA.
“It doesn’t matter how far or how fast you go – what matters is being out there together, having fun and feeling the freedom that trail running brings.”
To mark the day, ITRA will host an in-person social run in Chamonix, France. Co-organized with Run the Alps, the 7-8 km trail run will start at 11:00 CEST from Big Mountain Brewery. Entry is free, but spaces are limited and must be booked in advance.
Participants will receive items from ITRA and supporting brands. The wider international initiative invites women to take part in their own local trail runs and share their stories online to inspire others.
Founded in 2013, ITRA represents around 150,000 athletes and 3,500 event organizer members in over 160 countries. It is aiming to grow its roster of partners as the association continues to expand its support of trail running communities worldwide.
