Gritty Chix Mud Run Coming to West Virginia

Jul 22, 2016

Girls of all ages are invited to get down and dirty on July 23 during the 3rd Annual Gritty Chix Mud Run through a 1,500-acre playground in West Virginia’s southern mountains.

The event at ACE Adventure Resort (http://aceraft.com/) on the New River Gorge supports American Cancer Society Relay for Life and First Descents young adult cancer fighters and survivors.

With several years of hosting this fundraiser under their belts, organizers have notched the 5k route up again this year with new challenges along some of the wettest and muddiest trails on site. Gals will crawl under, over and through gooey obstacles with names like Commando Crawl (the first of many events that will quickly dissolve any muddy inhibitions), Slicky Slide, Mud Wall, Old Fashioned Mud Hole and Lilly Pads, to name a just a few.

Teams and individuals can participate. Organizers say they won’t exclude males who embrace grit, or those tough guys who are man enough to run with the Gritty Chix. Prizes go to the biggest team, the most creative team name and the best team costumes. The event is open to age 10 and up. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is $45. The fee includes free parking and free Saturday night camping, access to showers and evening entertainment at the Lost Paddle Lounge. Check in begins at 10 a.m. and the event begins at noon. For more information please see http://aceraft.com/pages/gritty-chix-mud-run or tune into a fun video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-j4u12e0H0

This spring the resort underwent a nearly $1 million infrastructure upgrade with enhanced guest amenities. Along with lodging and food & beverage refurbishments and additions, roads and parking facilities have been expanded and a new entrance landscaped. Much of the splash, however, has been lavished on a five-acre water park. Upgraded Wonderland Waterpark installations and amenities include two brand-new 300-foot industrial-strength waterslides, 40 new inflatable lake toys, an expanded beach area, a new retail store, snack shack and arcade, plus the addition of seven new bathrooms and eight changing rooms. Gritty Chix will welcome the opportunity to rejuvenate at the lake after the event with a discounted pass available at time of pre-registration.

ACE Adventure Resort is also the East Coast’s premier escape for world-class whitewater rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers as well as zip lining, mountain biking, disc golf, stand up paddle boarding and rock climbing. The adjacent 70,000-acre New River Gorge National River is an option for miles of wilderness exploring afoot and on horseback or fat tire bike. Guests may also enjoy world class fishing on the New River for small mouth bass.

Once at the resort, people like to stay put. This means that on premise dining and beverage venues are integral to the resort. The current improvements herald renovations to the bar, both inside and out, including a large outdoor pavilion. Also new pizza ovens have been added to facilitate ACE’s award-winning brick oven pizza.

In addition to being the region’s largest private campground for tents and RVs, the resort hosts overnight guests in more than 55 cabins and lodges that sleep from four to 14. Nearly all of the deluxe cabins now have new beds, comforters, window dressings, lamps and furniture. Nine one-room Cozy Cabins have been renovated to offer two bedrooms. Full bathrooms have been added to 10 Cedar Cabins. Four other cabins that formerly utilized ladders to access sleeping lofts now have staircases.
