2017 US Youth Soccer Region I Championships to Bring More than $15 Million to Virginia

The 2017 US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships, to be played June 30 – July 4, will provide an estimated economic impact of more than $15 million to the Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg and Stafford, areas of Virginia.

Local restaurants, hotels, retail stores and others will benefit from the more than 5,000 players, coaches, teams and tournament officials, who also bring along their families to the six-day tournament. Visitors to the Spotsylvania, Va., area will book an estimated 15,000 room nights at area hotels plus another 2,850 dorm bed nights at the University of Mary Washington.

Over 260 top Boys and Girls US Youth Soccer teams from Region I, including at least 19 teams from the host Virginia Youth Soccer Association, will compete at the Publix Virginia Soccer Training Center/FFC Park and Embrey Mill Complex.

The US Youth Soccer Region I Championships will feature top teams in the 12U through 19/20U age groups and begin on June 30. Round robin games will take place Friday, June 30 through Sunday, July 2, with semifinal matches on Monday, July 3. The US Youth Soccer Region I Champions will be crowned following final games Tuesday, July 4.

US Youth Soccer State Champions and select wildcards in the 12U through 19/20U Boys and Girls age groups from 15 State Associations, including from host Virginia Youth Soccer Association, will participate in the event. The other state associations represented include Connecticut, Delaware, Eastern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania,  Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York West, Pennsylvania West, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.

Regional winners of the 13U through 19/20U age groups earn a berth to the 2017 US Youth Soccer National Championships, July 24-30, at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas. One of the 14 national crowns awarded is the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sports, dating back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships.
