After months of dedication, training, and preparation, the Greater Waco Sports Commission is proud to celebrate the journey of TEAM Waco 2025 as they get ready to compete in IRONMAN® 70.3 Waco on Sunday, October 5, 2025. This year’s team includes Drew Greenway, Dawn Jones, Long Nguyen, Rafael Medina, and Cesia Sanchez.
TEAM Waco was created to knock down physical, mental, and financial barriers for local athletes wishing to take on the challenge of IRONMAN 70.3 Waco. Through community partnerships and sponsorships valued at $6,500 per athlete, participants receive coaching, equipment, race entries, and support to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed.
“These athletes have put in incredible work over the last several months,” said Mike Vogelaar, Executive Director of the Greater Waco Sports Commission. “Their commitment has not only prepared them for race day, but has also inspired our community to embrace healthy lifestyles and believe that anything is possible with the right support.”
From balancing jobs and families to tackling long training sessions in the Texas heat, the 2025 athletes have embodied resilience and teamwork every step of the way. Their personal stories are incredibly powerful, and media outlets interested in interviews are encouraged to reach out to GWSC.
TEAM Waco’s impact extends well beyond this year’s athletes. Program alumni will be returning to compete in relay teams and serve in key volunteer roles, giving back to the same community that once supported them. Past TEAM Waco athletes have gone on to achieve remarkable things—including Mitch Guera, a TEAM Waco alumnus who was recently featured on last season’s Survivor.
The Greater Waco Sports Commission invites the community to cheer on TEAM Waco athletes as they take on IRONMAN 70.3 Waco on October 5. Their success is a testament to what can happen when local businesses, volunteers, and organizations rally together to support our own.
