According to The Herald Banner of Greenville, Texas, on Aug. 2, Fletcher Warren Civic Center in Greenville, Texas, will be a mecca for collectors and enthusiasts of vintage fishing equipment for the second-ever North Texas Antique Fishing Lure and Tackle Show.
The show is being organized by Blake Taylor of Greenville, who has already taken a leading role in the annual National Fishing Lure Collectors Club’s Fishing Lure and Tackle Show in Temple for a number of years.
“I would like to cater this show toward the [Texas High School Bass Association] kiddos and students to show them the importance and evolvement of the sport and equipment over 100-plus years to where we are today,” Taylor said of the Greenville event.
With the focus on youth, admission to the event will be free for children 12 and younger and teens who are members of the Texas High School Bass Association. For adults and others, admission will be $5.
While fishing and its history is a personal passion of Taylor’s and those in his community of fellow enthusiasts, the City of Greenville’s department of community engagement has high hopes for the future of the event.
“The Fishing Lure and Tackle Show is something we’re very excited about,” Greenville community engagement director Micah McBay said at the Greenville City Council’s budget work session on Tuesday. “It went off great last year. We had 40 vendors, they gave out tackle boxes to kids and students, and a total of 40 hotel rooms were booked. That’s one of those things on the tourism side. We like to put the heads in beds as they say.
“These [antique lures] can go for thousands of dollars, and some of them are 100 years old and they are wooden and hand painted,” McBay added. “It’s really cool, so our long-term hope is that this turns into a national show.”
