The Professional Disc Golf Association has announced that the 2020 PDGA Professional Masters Disc Golf World Championships will be held in Johnson City and surrounding communities August 22nd through 29th, 2020. This week long international competition is the premier disc golf event with professional disc golfers competing in age based male and female divisions for World Championship Titles.
Tim Barr of the Warriors Lakefront Disc Golf Club and the Johnson City Convention and Visitors Bureau collaborated to submit a bid proposal to host the event. This marks the second time the two entities have teamed up with other community partners, such as Johnson City Parks and Recreation and Harmon Hills Disc Golf Course, to host a PDGA Major. In 2017, Johnson City hosted the US Women’s Disc Golf National Championship. This milestone event was the largest women only disc golf event ever hosted with 158 player representing six countries.
According to Michael Downes, Director of Operations for the PDGA, “Johnson City has displayed the dedication, expertise and determination necessary to produce a phenomenal PDGA Major event, and their efforts were proven in 2017 with the running of the US Women’s National Championship.” Mr. Downes was present and highly involved in the planning and execution of the 2017 women’s event. He went on to say that “The future of PDGA major events is bright, and we have committed communities such as Johnson City to thank for that.”
The 2020 event will likely attract more than 300 athletes plus family, friends, and fans from across the United States and overseas. The week long competition will feature doubles play, field events, social events, multiple rounds of singles play, and fundraising events to create an annual “take a kid disc golfing” day.
