SportsPITTSBURGH, National Senior Games Association Unveil 2023 National Senior Games Theme – Bridging Champions Through the Ages

Executives of SportsPITTSBURGH, a division of VisitPITTSBURGH, along with officials of the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) today announced the theme for the 2023 National Senior Games presented by Humana – Bridging Champions Through the Ages. County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and The Roberto Clemente Museum joined the officials at a media conference at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (DLCC), where the group also encouraged local residents to volunteer for the 2023 Games.

The Games, which will feature more than 10,000 elite athletes over the age of 50 participating in 20 sports July 7-18, 2023, are expected to draw more than 25,000 visitors to the region and generate an estimated $30 million in economic impact.

“The countdown is on, and we are just nine short months away from crowning deserving champions in the City of Champions,” SportsPITTSBURGH Executive Director Jennifer Hawkins said. “Pittsburgh takes great pride in creating champions and championship moments. Local legends like Roberto Clemente continue to connect our residents through the generations by their championship moments that we fondly remember. These athletes and their legacies helped inspire the theme of the 2023 National Senior Games – a theme we eagerly look forward to sharing with all the senior athletes in Pittsburgh next summer.” 

Today’s announcement was made in the midst of the 2022 NSGA Annual Conference, currently taking place in Pittsburgh. More than 80 association members, representing all 50 states, are in Pittsburgh this week for the Association’s Annual Meeting and educational sessions.

“The theme places a spotlight on the intergenerational impact of Senior Games,” NSGA Board Of Directors Chair Jack Shinnock said. “Our athletes inspire their own families and friends to keep active, and Pittsburghers of all ages will be impressed to see thousands of these positive-minded athletes on display at the National Senior Games.”

Hawkins today also announced that the volunteer signup portal is live at SportsPITTSBURGH.com.

“The 2023 National Senior Games will play out across Allegheny County next July, with some of the region’s best athletic facilities playing host to the competitions,” she explained. “I’m challenging our residents from all corners of the county to volunteer next summer and help us create the ultimate iconic sports experiences for these athletes and their families and supporters.”

The volunteer efforts will be coordinated by P3R, the Official Event Management Partner of SportsPITTSBURGH.

The NSGA previously announced the schedule for the 2023 National Senior Games, noting that the DLCC will serve as the main hub of activity in July. Athletes and the public will gather for several sports and to relax in The Village expo area in the convention center.

Competition is for athletes 50 and older and organized in five-year age divisions with medals awarded for each level. Traditionally held on odd-numbered years, the National Senior Games also requires athletes to first qualify at one of 52 Member Games spread across the country in the previous year.
