This year DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon runners will experience a new and improved course. The new route, which changed due to construction, will showcase a scenic tour of The City of Champions. On Sunday, May 7, runners will cross all three of Pittsburgh’s rivers, travel through 14 neighborhoods and pass by several of Pittsburgh landmarks including PNC Park, Heinz Field and PPG Paints Arena.

Most of the major changes are in the first 13 miles of the course with slight changes in the second half of the marathon course. The Downtown start line and finish line will remain the same as the 2016 course. Another bonus for runners is that the changes will make the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon a flatter, faster course.

“Pittsburgh is a world class sports town, and for years, runners have asked to run past Pittsburgh stadiums,” said Patrice Matamoros, P3R CEO. “Pittsburgh sports fans can now run past their favorite stadiums. With thousands of spectators bringing their Pittsburgh spirit on race day, runners will feel like they are part of Pittsburgh’s ‘fourth sports team’ and be welcomed like champions.”

Neighborhood festivals on race day will have a “Black & Gold” theme, and spectators are encouraged to show their Pittsburgh spirit on race day. More than 60 bands, 15 cheer groups and thousands of Pittsburgh fans are expected to line the streets on race day.

The Steel City Road Runners, Pittsburgh’s largest running club, will offer a free course preview training run on Saturday, April 15.
