Next year, the nation’s best senior athletes will descend on Pittsburgh to compete at the 2023 National Senior Games presented by Humana, set for July 7-18, 2023, at various sports facilities throughout the City of Champions.

The massive, multi-sport championships event for adults 50 and older will be hosted by SportsPITTSBURGH, a division of VisitPITTSBURGH. P3R, the Official Event Management Partner of SportsPITTSBURGH, will coordinate local operations of the Games.

The 2023 Games are a return visit for the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) and its athletes, as Pittsburgh also hosted the 2005 Games.

“The countdown is on to another iconic sports event in Pittsburgh,” SportsPITTSBURGH Executive Director Jennifer Hawkins said. “Our entire community is eager to welcome the NSGA and its inspirational athletes back to our region. While the athletes are busy qualifying for the Pittsburgh Games, Pittsburgh will be busy preparing a first-class experience for the competitors, their supporters, event staff and all associated with this prestigious national event.”

The 2022 Games, held May 10-23 in Greater Fort Lauderdale, featured 12,065 athletes competing in 22 sports, making them the second largest in the Games’ 35-year history. The 2019 National Senior Games set an all-time participation record with nearly 14,000 athletes in Albuquerque. Event organizers are optimistic for the 2023 Games based on this trend.

“We are coming off an extremely successful Games in Fort Lauderdale and are eagerly looking forward to gathering again in Pittsburgh in 2023,” NSGA CEO Marc T. Riker commented. “We remain bullish on Pittsburgh’s attendance, with many of our athletes sharing their eagerness to again visit the City of Champions. We continue to encourage our athletes to register for their state’s NSGA-sanctioned senior games so they can punch their tickets to Pittsburgh and enjoy all the new developments that the region offers.”

Sport action will be spread around the area, but the main hub of activity will be the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh, where several sports will be contested, and athletes and the public will gather and relax in The Athlete Village expo area. All competitions and events will be free and open to the public.

“Our team is already busy at work preparing for a first-class experience for the Senior Games’ athletes and staff,” said P3R CEO Troy Schooley. “We look forward to providing a competitive, rewarding atmosphere for the athletes and their supporters.”

Competition is for athletes 50 and older and organized in five-year age divisions with medals awarded for each level. Traditionally held on odd-numbered years, the National Senior Games also requires athletes to first qualify at one of 52 Member Games spread across the country in the previous year. The Pennsylvania Senior Games is the state’s qualifying event and will be held July 22-31, 2022, in greater Luzerne County.
