Cincinnati Rugby Football Club & Butler County Visitors Bureau Host 7s Event

Elite rugby teams from around the Midwest will descend on Fairfield, Ohio July 12 to compete in the 10th Annual Cin City 7s Rugby Tournament.  A partnership between the Cincinnati Rugby Football Club (CRFC) and the Butler County Visitors Bureau (BCVB) brings this tournament to Fairfield.

Local teams as well as others traveling from Minneapolis, Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit will compete in the event. The tournament will determine which city’s team will represent the Midwest in the National Championships held later this year. An estimated $80,000 in economic impact is expected to flow into the surrounding community as a result of the event.

Featuring break away runs and big hits, Rugby 7s is a variation of traditional rugby in which teams are composed of 7 players instead of the usual 15 and matches are reduced to shorter time periods. This full contact sport is played on a pitch the size of a soccer field and is gaining in popularity due to its reentry into the Olympic event lineup for the 2016 Olympic Games.

“Butler County is thrilled to welcome the Cin City 7s Rugby Tournament to Fairfield,” said Mark Hecquet, Executive Director of the Butler County Visitors Bureau. “Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. We feel privileged to work with the CRFC to bring this event to the Butler County community and look forward to many years of partnership ahead.”

The tournament is open to the public and features both men’s and women’s rugby games in a family-friendly atmosphere. The event kicks off at 10AM at the Brimelow Fields at 6441 Stockton Road, Fairfield, OH and will run into the night with championship matches wrapping up in the evening. Parking is $5 per car and admission is free. Whether a lifelong rugby fan or new to the sport, local fans and novices will be on hand to cheer, explain the game and celebrate the sport.
