Butler County will welcome more than 1,000 players and spectators this weekend for USA Ultimate’s 2015 Great Lakes Regional Ultimate Championships. The tournament will be held at Voice of America Athletic Complex in West Chester.  The Butler County Visitors Bureau (BCVB), USA Ultimate, and the Cincinnati Ultimate Players Association (CUPA) have partnered to bring thirty-six teams from around the Midwest to compete September 12-13, 2015.

The 2015 Great Lakes Regional Championships builds on the success of the 2015 US Open Ultimate Championships, which was also hosted in West Chester earlier this year.

Combining athletic endurance, aerial passing of a flying disc and scoring zones similar to football, Ultimate is played by an estimated 7 million people worldwide. The sport’s popularity is growing rapidly and it can be found on college campuses, intramural leagues and sports clubs across the US.

“CUPA is excited the Great Lakes Regional Tournament will be hosted in West Chester this year,” said Dale Wilker, Tournament Director for CUPA. “This is a great opportunity for the community to learn more about Ultimate through top-notch competition.”

Teams from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio will compete for titles. The winner will qualify for the 2015 Club Championships held in Frisco, TX. A local Cincinnati team, Steamboat Ultimate, is a favorite this year taking their number one regional ranking into the tournament. The event is expected to pump more than $250,000 into the local economy.

“We’d like to welcome the USA Ultimate Great Lakes Regional Championship to Butler County for the 2nd year in a row,” said Mark Hecquet, Executive Director of the BCVB. “The BCVB is proud to partner with CUPA and USA Ultimate to create a fantastic tournament and great local experience for athletes and spectators during their stay.“

The event is free and open to the public. Competition will take place between 9AM and 5PM on both Saturday and Sunday. For more information and schedules, please visit https://cincyultimate.org.
