Greensboro Continues to Pin Down Wrestling Tradition

Share
Jan 06, 2023

The Greensboro Coliseum has a tremendous history in hosting holiday wrestling events dating back to 1961 with historic names such as Ric Flair, Andre the Giant, Blackjack Mulligan, the Undertaker, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. On Wednesday night, the Greensboro Coliseum continued that tradition by hosting the WWE Live Holiday Tour but Thursday morning a new holiday wrestling tradition began with the Holy Angels Invitational high school wrestling tournament kicking off in the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

The Holy Angels Invitational Wrestling Tournament will feature 115 of the top teams from 8 states. The Holy Angels Invitational started in 2010 at Charlotte Catholic High School and moved to the Bojangles Coliseum from 2013-2021. In October, it was announced that the tournament would be moving to the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center for the next five years. In moving to Greensboro, the tournament has almost doubled in size from 68 teams in 2021 to 115 this year. The tournament will also feature one of the nation’s emerging sports with a girl’s invitational division. The NCHSAA announced earlier this year that girls wrestling will be a sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year but will host the NCHSAA Girls Invitational at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex on Saturday, February 4, 2023. The NCHSAA Individual Wrestling State Championships have been held in the Greensboro Coliseum since 2010 and will be held February 16-18, 2023.
