IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Group company, announced that it has acquired the Musselman Triathlon, an independent race that takes place annually in Geneva, New York. Beginning in 2020, IRONMAN® will now own and operate the IRONMAN® 70.3® Musselman triathlon taking place on July 18-19, 2020, marking the company’s third event in New York state, joining the two events located in Lake Placid. The popular triathlon event will be incorporated into the IRONMAN 70.3 Series and general registration for the 2020 event will be announced at a later date.

“This event has such a rich history and being able to add and event of this caliber to the IRONMAN 70.3 portfolio continues to show our commitment to providing our athletes with consistent, high-quality experiences in a variety of amazing communities,” said Philip LaHaye, Vice President of North American Operations for IRONMAN. “With this race being a recipient of many awards within the triathlete community, we are tremendously excited to build upon the great experience and care that has been consistently delivered to athletes.”

Founded in 2003, the Musselman Triathlon is a half-distance triathlon consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and a 13.1-mile run. The race has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including being named the most family-friendly race by Triathlete Magazine, best beginner friendly event by Triathlon Business International, as well as the race with the best atmosphere according to Inside Triathlon.

The swim features a single-loop course that starts in the northeast corner of Seneca Lake, takes swimmers through State Park Marina, and finishes at the boat ramp at Seneca Lake State Park. From there, athletes will depart on a rolling, single-loop bike course that includes long stretches of shoreline on both the Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Athletes will pass wineries and gorgeous New York countryside along the Seneca and Cayuga Wine Trails, including a shady stretch of course that goes through Sampson State Park. Following the bike, athletes will head out on a single-loop run that heads west along a lakefront path at the northern tip of Seneca Lake. Athletes will wind their way through the city of Geneva, the gardens of Houghton House, and the campuses of Hobart and William Smith Colleges before returning downtown and finishing along the same lakefront path where they started.
