The Boilermaker is proud to announce a new, youth-oriented community outreach initiative. The program will be called “Boilermaker Virtual Summer Camp” and is a virtual iteration of its existing Kids in Training program for the summer of 2020.

Given the challenges of holding live group activities this summer under the restrictions associated with COVID-19, the Boilermaker, along with its Community Outreach partners, CREE | Wolfspeed and Ramboll is offering a fun, no-cost, self-directed program designed to keep our area’s youth moving and physically active during these trying times.

“In addition to the historic global health toll that the coronavirus has taken to date, its reach has also impacted the opportunities for our area’s youth to remain physically active,” said Mark Donovan, Boilermaker President. “So many activities, including our own Kids in Training after school running program, were wiped out from the current spring school session. Our hope is that we can provide a simple pathway for parents to get their children engaged and moving this summer in a safe, controlled manner.”

The self-directed Virtual Summer Camp will run for six weeks from July 6th through August 14th with two unique groups: grades K – 6th and 7th – 12th.

Each week, the Boilermaker will email each registered participant a plan for physical activities that can be worked on during that week. These activities were developed together with our friends at the Sneaker Store and will be geared towards the abilities of that particular grade group. These activities were designed to be easily conducted by the kids with varying levels of parental or guardian supervision, if any.

At the end of six weeks, the program will wrap up with a virtual race in which each participant can run a specific distance at their own pace and on their own schedule between August 15th and August 31st.

Space is limited and registration is now open. For more information or to register, visit boilermaker.com.

The Kids in Training program is an after-school running program that is designed to promote physical activity, proper nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle during the normal fall and spring school sessions. It is available to any elementary school in Oneida and Herkimer County that is interested. Due to the coronavirus epidemic this program has not been able to operate normally.
