USA Triathlon announced that due to the recently announced cancellation of the New Jersey State Triathlon, the 2020 USA Triathlon Club National Championships will no longer take place as planned on July 18-19 due to current local government guidelines surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
The championship, now postponed, was initially scheduled in conjunction with the New Jersey State Triathlon, organized by race production company CGI Racing and held at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey. Additional information regarding status of the 2020 USA Triathlon Club National Championships will be forthcoming.
The USA Triathlon Club National Championships draws triathlon clubs from across the country to compete for national titles in sprint- and Olympic-distances. The New Jersey State Triathlon hosted the 2019 USA Triathlon Club National Championships, which marked the return of the event to the National Championships calendar after a two-year absence.
“We wanted to make our final decision on whether or not to cancel the New Jersey State Triathlon only after we had exhausted every possible avenue that would allow us to produce it. Things are moving rapidly right now and, as of this past Friday, we thought there may be a chance the race could take place,” said Larry Redrow, owner of CGI Racing and Race Director for the 2020 USA Triathlon Club National Championships. “While we were optimistic, it became clear from discussions with government agencies and health officials that the significant impact of COVID-19 would prevent the race from being held.”
“As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19 on multisport events nationwide, including USA Triathlon National Championships, it is important to be flexible and look for solutions to provide opportunities for our athletes,” said Brian D’Amico, Director of Events at USA Triathlon. “The safety of all competitors, staff, volunteers and the community at large remain our highest priority, and we will continue to evaluate the situation surrounding COVID-19.”
Athletes currently registered for the 2020 New Jersey State Triathlon have several deferral options, including transferring their registration to the 2021 New Jersey State Triathlon. Athletes will receive an email from CGI Racing with more details about how to select a deferral option.

USA Triathlon continues to monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19, while following the guidance of local authorities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), when making decisions regarding the status of USA Triathlon events and programs. Any further potential changes to USA Triathlon’s National Championships event calendar will be communicated as soon as possible.
