It was announced that one of the nine regional contests for U. S. Figure Skating will take place in Independence, Missouri in the fall of 2015, in preparation for the 2016 national championships.

“This is a very exciting sporting event for our region,” said Cori Day, Director of Tourism for Independence. “The popularity of figure skating has surged in recent years, and we are honored to invite skaters, families and fans from a nine-state region to participate and visit.”

Independence will be the host city for the Southwestern  Regional Figure Skating Championships from October 3 through 6, 2015.

The local host clubs are the Heartland Figure Skating Club (HFSC) and the Kansas City Figure Skating Club (KCSFC) and all events will be held at the Independence Events Center. They are hosting a launch party  for both clubs’ members and learn-to-skate skaters featuring Kansas City native and member of the KCFSC and two-time national pairs champion John Coughlin next month on April 5 from 4 – 5:30 PM at the Community Ice Rink at the Independence Events Center.

“What a thrill for the local skating community,” said Karen Juliana, HFSC  President and Co-Chair of the event. “Having this event in Independence enables our local skaters to compete on a much bigger scale than usual. Everyone is very excited.”

Other host cities include Lake Place, NY, San Jose, CA, Aston, PA, Seattle, WA, Pleasant Prairie, WI, Pasadena, CA, Boxborough, MA and Fort Wayne, IN, all events taking place between October 3 and 20, 2015.

The top four skaters in the ladies and men’s events at each of the nine regional championships will qualify for one of three sectional championships. The sectional championships are the only qualifying phase for pairs and ice dance. Sectional Championships for 2016 will take place in November 2015 in Simsbury, CN, Cleveland, OH, and Los Angeles, CA.

The top four finishers at each level in each discipline at the sectional championships will earn a berth to the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, set for January 16-24, 2016, at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, MN.
