Jun 04, 2015

The 2015 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship (PGA) comes to Belmont Country Club in Belmont, MA, from June 9-14.

The Constellation Senior Players is one of five major championships on the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour for eligible professionals age 50 and over. The Constellation Senior Players has generated more than $9.5 million for charity since 1992.

Fans are invited to two special events on Tuesday that will feature Boston sports stars, Champions Tour players and an inspiring message from Dennis Walters. On June 9 at 2 p.m., fans are invited to the City of Champions Challenge, where former players from the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics will team up with a member of the local media and a Champions Tour player for a competition at the practice area at Belmont Country Club. Fans will then have the chance to see The Dennis Walters Golf Show at 3 p.m. at the driving range.

“These two events on Tuesday during the championship will be a great way to kick off the week and we invite fans to come out and experience what each has to offer,” Joe Rotellini, executive director of the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS, said. “It will be an afternoon full of golf competition, fun and giving back to the community.”

Fans can purchase daily grounds tickets for $20 plus tax for Tuesday’s practice round, or a weekly grounds ticket for $130 plus tax. Also available are Turtle Club Tickets, which provide access to the grounds Tuesday-Sunday as well as to the Turtle Club on No. 15 tee and No. 16 fairway. Fans are reminded that up to four children, ages 18 and under, are admitted to the grounds free of charge with every one paid adult, and all active duty, military reserve, military retirees and National Guard and their families receive two complimentary tickets per day to the Championship.

Executives and employees from Constellation will also join Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston for a “Day of Giving Back” in honor of the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship on Tuesday from 12-3 p.m. The Constellation team will raise a wall, plant shrubs and prepare the construction site of the final two units of the Red Rose Condominiums in effort to lower energy costs for low-income families.

“Giving back to the communities we serve is a key part of Constellation’s culture, and an important aspect of the SENIOR PLAYERS Championship,” said Bruce Stewart, chief marketing officer and senior vice president for Constellation. “We have a long history of serving customers in the Boston area, and we are pleased to kick off the championship by working with Habitat to provide local families with affordable housing and energy savings.”

City of Champions Challenge

2 p.m., practice area

To help kick off the 2015 Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, former players from the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics will team up with a member of the local media and a Champions Tour player to be determined for a competition similar to the basketball game, “HORSE.” One team will have the opportunity to call its shot, which all three members will then attempt. The two balls that land closest to the pin for each team will be measured, and the team with the lowest combined distance to the pin will receive a point for that round. After three rounds, the winner will be determined, provided there are no ties. In the event of a tie, officials from the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS will choose the final shot, and the team with the two balls closest to the pin will be named champions. The winning team will win $10,000 for their team’s charitable foundation, and the two losing teams will each be awarded $5,000 for their team’s charitable foundation.

The Dennis Walters Golf Show

3 p.m., driving range

The Dennis Walters Golf Show is a show devoted to golf lessons, as well as life lessons. Walters’ dream was to play on the PGA TOUR, but an accident in 1974 left him paralyzed from the waist down. While his dream of playing on the PGA TOUR was over, it didn’t stop him from pursuing golf. He engineered a golf cart that allowed him to swivel from the passenger seat to allow him to hit golf balls. Since 1977, he has made over 3,000 appearances worldwide. The Dennis Walters Golf Show features trick shots, golf clubs made with unusual items such as fishing rods and an underlying message of hard work and perseverance. Walters’ attitude earned him an honorary lifetime membership in the PGA of America, one of just 12 people with that distinction. He is also a spokesperson for The First Tee, an international youth development organization whose mission is to impact the lives of young people with character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston
