Yonex 2023 National & Para National Badminton Championships

February 1 - 4, 2023

at Prairie Badminton (Winnipeg)

Canada's best and brightest badminton stars are competing for the gold in the heart of Canada.

Prairie Badminton, located just south of Dugald in the St Boniface Industrial Park just has turned its 9-court badminton facility into a much more intimate 4-court setting where fans will be dazzled by the fast pace and hard hitting action.  Prairie Badminton last held these national championships in 2020, just a month prior to the covid lockdowns, and due in part to rave reviews, were selected again to host in 2023.

This year Manitoba has a few opportunities for athlete's to make a splash in the standings.  Keep your eyes out for Prairie Badminton's Dale Kinley & Kyi Nichols who knocked out the #2 seeds in the last national circuit tournament in early January in BC.  Although they just recently paired up together, they've already made a name for themselves.  Unfortunately due to luck of the draw, should they win their first match they have to play the #2 seeds in the second round who are favored to go all the way this tournament.  Kinley is originally from Stonewall MB, but as a full-time coach at Prairie Badminton has recently made the move to live in Winnipeg full-time.

A young and budding talent in Victor Ho has an opportunity to have a break-out tournament in the Men's Singles category.  He's had some injury troubles the last few years but has shown massive potential the times that he's been healthy.  Placed slightly more central in the draw he has a good opportunity to play the #1 seed in the quarter-finals if he makes it there.

Lastly, Kiren Deraj who has played for Team Canada in his junior career, and has a bronze medal to his name at the U23 National Championships, is hoping to gain more traction on the circuit as a young adult.  He's placed rather central in the Men's Singles draw as well and is hoping for a strong showing against Alberta in the first round on Wednesday.
