Maine to Host U.S. National Toboggan Championships

Feb 05, 2016

The Maine Sports Commission has announced that Camden, Maine, will host the U.S. National Toboggan Championships , February 5-7.

The Camden Snow Bowl and the Event Committee are thrilled again to be bringing another great three-day weekend of outdoor fun, activities, camaraderie and spirited competition to the Midcoast. Camden will again host teams and spectators from all over the country for a weekend dedicated to the zany sport of traditional wooden toboggan racing.

The most revered prize of the past 25 years of U.S. National Toboggan Championships is to win first place in the 4-person division. The division has twice as many teams as the other two combined, and has twice as many teams in the finals, based on fastest times. The 2015 4-Person Division first place winner is #285 4 LO with times of 9.05 and 8.98, for a combined total of 18.03. Williams Toboggan Chute and the first U.S. National Toboggan Championships were held, an event created by then-Camden Parks and Recreation Director Ken Bailey. In 2015, the Toboggan Championships celebrated 25 years.

Still going strong, the annual “Toboggan Nationals” boasts a field of 425 teams, nearly 1,300 racers and more than 6,000 spectators for three days of events. This sell-out event makes the Ragged Mountain Recreation Area the most popular place to be in the Midcoast each February.

It’s a Mardi Gras theme this year and contestants will bring “Big Easy” costumes and regalia for another long weekend of toboggan racing at dazzling speeds. The Town of Camden also offers fireworks, a snowplow parade, downtown dancing and more downtown during Toboggan National weekend. The full Winterfest and Toboggan Nationals schedules are included below.
