North Central College will host more than 150 women martial artists from across the country this summer at the 2019 National Women’s Martial Arts Federation (NWMAF) Martial Arts and Self-Defense Conference.

NCC is hosting the annual event, scheduled for July 17–21, for the third year in a row. The theme of this year’s conference is “Be Brave.”

“A lot of people today could use a shot of bravery,” said Cathy Chapaty, NWMAF board chair. “This camp is always a powerful event led by inspiring women who’ve trained on the mats and taught self-defense for decades.

“In one conference, there’s easily over a thousand years of martial arts and self-defense knowledge, and we’re excited to share our experience and strength.”

The NWMAF is a 1,300-member strong network of women and girls who practice all styles of martial arts, healing arts, and self-defense. Its member base consists not only of martial artists and instructors, but also school owners.

“For more than 40 years, the NWMAF has welcomed women and girls regardless of lifestyle, sexual preference, race, color, creed, religion, class, age, or physical condition,” Chapaty said. “We find strength in one another and promote awareness and appreciation of our differences.”

The NWMAF also is a leader in Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD).

“Our self-defense committee certifies instructors in the ESD method, and our annual conference features professional development training from self-defense experts who present cutting-edge research and best-practices.”

Conference self-defense classes also offer continuing education credits to social workers.

Chapaty encourages those interested to register for the group’s signature event as soon as possible.

“We can’t wait to get together to train, learn, improve our skills and empower others,” she said.

Early registration is now open; the deadline for trainer applications is March 15. To register, apply to teach or to join the NWMAF, visit https://www.nwmaf.org/
