Robert Murdock, President of the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau (CTMEETINGS), has been appointed as the newest Commissioner of the Connecticut Boxing Commission. Murdock’s appointment was made by Connecticut State Senator Martin M. Looney, the Legislature’s Senate President Pro Tempore.
“The Connecticut Boxing Commission makes recommendations to the Governor, the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection and the General Assembly to encourage, develop and promote the sport of boxing and mixed martial arts in this state,” explains its Chairman Scot X. Esdaile. “Bob Murdock is a great addition to the Boxing Commission as the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau interacts with event promoters from throughout the nation, working to bring sports events and meetings of all types to venues across Connecticut. We are fortunate to have him join our Commission."
The members of the Connecticut Boxing Commission are: Chairman Scot X. Esdaile; Theodore Bobroske; Jeffrey Dressler; Kurt Harrison; Dr. Cato Laurencin; Robert Murdock; and Tom Nugent. The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is the regulating agency for boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) in the state, with the exception of tribal lands.
Robert Murdock has served as President of the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau (CTMEETINGS) since January 2019 and also is its Director of National Accounts Sports. Murdock joined the Bureau in 2014 as Director of Sports Marketing and later expanded his responsibilities to include marketing for the SMERF and Affinity Groups. CTMEETINGS is the State’s official meetings, conventions and sports event sales and marketing organization, and works in partnership with Connecticut’s businesses, institutions, nonprofit organizations and their surrounding communities, the organization works to generate new and returning events, thereby generating increased economic impact for Connecticut’s local regions and tax revenue for the State.
Prior to joining CTMEETINGS in 2014, Murdock spent seven years as Director of Sales at Destination Worcester (Mass.), responsible for promoting and selling the City and Central Massachusetts region as a destination for meetings and events. Before that, he was Director of Administration for the Massachusetts Sports Partnership, and was Event & Sales Manager/Director of Business Operations for a variety of Boston-area organizations including professional athletes’ foundations and promotional tours.
Murdock also is Treasurer of the Board of the New England Society of Convention & Visitor Bureaus (NESCVB) and was its 2019 President. The NESCVB is a cooperative organization comprised of CVBs throughout New England that collectively markets the region for tourism, meetings, and conventions, and offers complimentary services to planners. In addition, he serves as a Board Member for the Connecticut Lodging Association, a Board member of the Connecticut Sports Management Group (CSMG), and is a longtime member of Sports ETA (formerly called the National Association of Sports Commissions) and is Connecticut’s representative on that association’s States Committee.
A Clinton, Conn. resident, Murdock serves as his Town’s representative to the State’s Central Regional Tourism District, and he is a member of the Town’s Economic Development Commission. Murdock received both a master’s and bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Bucknell University (Penn.). He also holds a master’s degree in Sports Management from Springfield College (Mass.). A lifelong sports enthusiast, Murdock was one of only 108 Americans invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team in 1988 and has a marathon personal best of 2:17:45.
