The 42nd annual United States Tennis Association (USTA) National 40 Hard Court Championships will feature the top players in the country in the 40 and over division, and will be played December 1-7 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Competition is slated for men and women in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Competitors must reach or exceed the age of 40 at any time in this calendar year to be eligible. This seven-day event is scheduled to begin on Monday, Dec. 1 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 7. Also on the agenda is the USTA National Father & Son and Grandfather & Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships beginning Friday, December 5, with matches concluding Sunday, December 7. The Father and Son championship has been held continuously at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club since 1959, and attracts the top father and son tennis teams in the U.S. The Grandfather/Grandson Championship is a relatively new competitive division that began at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club just a few years ago.
“The National 40 Hard Court Championships is a great way to end the year for players and spectators,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “We are anticipating a fantastic week of championship tennis.”
Last year’s men’s singles champion Tony Bujan of San Clemente, Calif., has entered the tournament and will return to defend his title. Bujan defeated fifth-seeded Michael Chang of Anaheim Calif., 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 in last year’s men’s singles final.
