Nautica Malibu Triathlon Set for September

The 33rd edition of the Nautica Malibu Triathlon presented by Bank of America is a ‘celebrity-studded event’ set for September 13-15. This year’s race features a new long course distance, across a full weekend of racing.

Racers of all experience levels – from world-class athletes to weekend warriors – often toe the start line just beside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, who turn out annually to test themselves and raise money for race beneficiary Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Local triathletes of all abilities joined coaches, partners and race officials to officially kick off the 2019 event on Thursday, June 20 at Greenleaf Restaurant in Venice Beach. Attendees had the opportunity to test wetsuits, talk to bike mechanics and celebrate with other competitors as the training season gets fully up to speed.

“When the calendar turns to June, our training and fundraising season kicks into high gear,” said Michael Epstein, Executive Producer of the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. “2019 is going to be a special year for us in Malibu as we’ve added a new long course distance; and we thank the Southern California triathlon community for joining us to officially launch the new event.”

The 2019 Nautica Malibu Triathlon has three race options: the Olympic, Classic and the brand-new Long Course.

The Olympic-distance race (Saturday, September 14) includes a 1.5K ocean swim, 40K out-and-back bike ride and a 10K run along Zuma Beach. Also on Saturday, the new Long Course race begins with a 1.2-mile swim off the Malibu coastline. This is followed by a 56-mile bike ride passing Point Mugu rock and through the open fields of Oxnard, and finishes with a 13.1-mile.

Finally, the Classic race (Sunday, September 15) includes a 0.5-mile ocean swim, 17-mile out-and-back bike ride and a 4-mile run along scenic Malibu roads.

Doing good is also in the race’s DNA. Each year, more than 40 Los Angeles area corporations and entertainment industry companies vie not just for bragging rights for the fastest time but for the most money raised for paediatric cancer research.

Last year, the Nautica Malibu Tri raised more than US$1.4 million in support of kids facing childhood cancer.

A number of celebrities have brought their star-power to the cause and helped reach record-setting fundraising goals. These include: Jennifer Lopez, Tom Cruise, Jennifer Garner, Matthew McConaughey, Teri Hatcher, Mario Lopez, Jeremy Piven, Will Ferrell, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, Zac Efron and Ellie Kemper to name just a handful.
