Hard Court Tennis Championship Coming to La Jolla

The return of five defending singles champions will highlight the USTA National Women’s Senior 50-90 Hard Court Tennis Championships, which get underway on Monday, May 7 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Dr, La Jolla, CA 92037.
    
The top female tennis competitors (ages 50 to 90+) from across the United States will compete for USTA gold balls, which are awarded to national champions.  Events in the national tennis tournament will include singles and doubles in the 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 & over age divisions.
    
San Diego’s Ros Nideffer, a former WTA touring professional, is the top-seed and four-time defending champion in the 50 and over singles division. Nideffer, who lives in the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, is a former two-time singles quarterfinalist at Wimbledon. She achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 15 in the world in 1990.
    
In the 60 and over singles division, Susan Wright of Grand Junction, Colo., is the top-seed and defending champion. Brenda Carter of Charleston, S.C., is the top-seed and defending champion in the 70 and over singles division.
    
Roz King of San Diego is the top-seed and defending champion in the 80 and over singles division, while Rita Price of Aurora, Colo., is the defending champion in the 90 and over singles division, which will be played in a Round-Robin format.

Matches are scheduled to start Monday, May 7 at 9 a.m., Tuesday, May 8 through Friday, May 11 at 8 a.m., and on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 at 9 a.m. (all time PST).

50, 60 & 70 Singles & Doubles: Matches will begin Monday. Main Draw finals scheduled for Friday. Consolation Draw finals scheduled for Saturday.
    
80 Singles: Matches will begin Tuesday. Main Draw finals scheduled for Saturday. Consolation Draw finals scheduled for Sunday.
    
80 Doubles: Matches will begin Wednesday. Main Draw finals scheduled for Saturday. Consolation Draw finals scheduled for Sunday.
    
90 Singles: Matches will begin Tuesday as a Round Robin event. Players will receive a day off between each round. Scheduled to finish on Saturday.
    
90 Doubles: Matches will begin on Wednesday. Players will receive a day off between each round. Scheduled to finish on Sunday.
    
Tennis enthusiasts are welcome to view the tournament at The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, which will offer free admission to spectators for the entire event. Tournament attendees and spectators may also dine on-site at the Club's Snack Bar and Club Dining restaurant during the tournament. On-site parking is available for $10 per day.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 46th Annual Men's Senior Championships will also take place during the week in conjunction with the women’s events, and will include both singles and doubles for 60, 65, 70, 75, 80 and 85 and over age groups. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they will feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments. Total participation for both the men’s and women’s tournaments is expected to be 300-plus players.
