Tour de Big Bear and Mammoth Gran Fondo have announced the 2026 expansion of the California Pass Challenge (CalPass Challenge). The series, which previously focused on high-altitude cycling events, will now include Phil’s Cookie Fondo in Malibu to add a coastal element to the three-month cycling initiative.
The CalPass Challenge allows riders to participate in three renowned Californian events at a combined rate of US$399. According to the organisers, this represents a saving of over US$150 on individual registration fees. An interest-free instalment plan has also been introduced to increase accessibility for participants.
Phil Gaimon, former professional cyclist and event organiser, said “We’re excited to include Phil’s Cookie Fondo in the CalPass lineup. Joining forces with Tour de Big Bear and Mammoth Gran Fondo allows us to offer riders an exceptional challenge across California’s diverse settings. Our Malibu Fondo will deliver the coastal riding that people love. And with us being the final event in the series – 10,000 gourmet cookies are a sweet reward.”
The 2026 series schedule includes:
Tour de Big Bear (July 31 – August 2, 2026, in Big Bear Lake, CA)
This high-altitude event, situated at 6,752ft elevation, is organised by the Big Bear Cycling Association. It offers nine different event options spanning road, gravel, and XC mountain biking with distances ranging from 25–100 miles. Since its inception, the event has contributed more than US$1 million to local charities.
Mammoth Gran Fondo (September 12, 2026, in Mammoth Lakes, CA)
Located at 8,075ft elevation, this event features 75 miles of road closed to traffic. It is presented by the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation, a non-profit organisation supporting youth sports and education in the Eastern Sierra. Riders can choose from Gran, Medio, and Piccolo routes between 42–102 miles.
Phil’s Cookie Fondo (October 24–25, 2026, in Malibu, CA)
The final leg of the challenge moves to the coast at a much lower 105ft elevation. The event offers seven distances from 20–100 miles and is known for its cookie-themed aid stations. Since starting in 2016, the event has raised over US$600,000 for charities such as No Kid Hungry and the Sierra Club Los Angeles Chapter.
Registration for the CalPass Challenge is open and must be completed by July 27, 2026. The organisers are currently offering an incentive for early registration; those who sign up before the end of March 2026 will be entered into a draw to win a complimentary pass for a friend.
Participants in the series will receive commemorative medals, limited-edition jerseys, and access to VIP experiences at each host venue.
