The California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting physical fitness and camaraderie among first responders, is proud to announce a brand-new chapter for one of its most anticipated events. After four successful years in Las Vegas, the First Responders Relay is relocating to Ventura, California, and will be taking place on Sunday, October 12, with a reimagined 30-mile relay course and fresh location that highlights the region’s coastal beauty.

This year’s race will start and finish at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach, offering a scenic route along the ocean for teams of first responders from across the country and world. The shorter course is designed to be more accessible, while maintaining the competitive and team-focused spirit that has defined the event since its debut.

“We are thrilled to bring the First Responders Relay to Southern California and introduce a new, more dynamic racecourse,” said Jim King, President of the California Police Athletic Federation. “This move represents the next evolution of the event, one that we hope will attract even more first responder athletes while continuing to provide a space for camaraderie, wellness, and friendly competition.”

Open to first responders representing law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, custom and correctional officers, the relay will feature nine divisions, including Open, Mixed, Women, Senior, 500, 250, Station/Division, Support Services and Support Services Mixed categories. To be eligible, participants must be publicly employed as full time, and retirees and separated employees with over 10 years’ service must show proof. More information on division and eligibility requirements can be found here.

As in previous years, the event will conclude with an award ceremony honoring the fastest teams, with the top finishers receiving the Duke Nyhus/Bob Burke perpetual trophy, a longstanding symbol of excellence in first responder athleticism.

The fifth annual First Responders Relay is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 12 at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach (450 E. Harbor Blvd). Spectator admission is free.
